How to Read Gardens is an excellent field guide for lay people who appreciate spending time in public and private garden spaces and who want to know about the features that make them so inviting to their visitors. The book names and explains a multitude of elements and their different variations that can be found in formal and not-so-formal landscapes. Successful gardens and parks have in common that there is an organic flow between different spaces and a lot of features feel like they are meant to be right where they are. This book helps me appreciate that the water features, hedges, flower beds, buildings, etc. did not happen accidentally, but actually have been carefully placed into the landscape with specific intentions to to stimulate the senses and create a certain atmosphere for the visitors. Lorraine Harrison's descriptions and explanations are very detailed. For example, I know what a gazebo is. But I do not know the differences between a T'ing and a Kiosk. This book helps me close that gap.Product details

Excellent a professor recommended
It was intended to accompany you in garden walks, providing ideas of what to pay attention to +explanations.Like answering questions for what they made these garden elements..to which epoque the particular garden belongs etc
The book makes a newcomer acquainted with icons of garden design. Good mix of information in the form of short and bright articles. You feel the author is a professional garden historican.
Expands your horizons on garden elements and styles. Good structured, clear book accomplished with good colour photographs. Pocket sized yet about 250 pages.
An easily understood primer on how to understand gardens. How they came to be, why they are designed the way they are, what they are supposed to represent. Now, when I visit famous gardens, I can have a deeper understanding of them.
This book was suggested to me by the publisher and, as such, I didn't pay much attention to the back cover introduction - an error! Upon reading it, I realised the book isn't designed to be an in-depth study of each element a garden contains - as the title suggests - but rather a handy guide to go with the reader on garden travels. It draws attention to each part a garden may have and explains why it's there or what the gardener is trying to achieve stylistically. For me, it is a little too superficial so a three out of five, but I can see how others may enjoy its light, conversational tone.
"How to Read Gardens" is a short guide to garden appreciation. The author started by discussing the various purposes for and types of gardens (pleasure, fruit, herbs, etc.). The section on styles (Dutch, English, etc.) talked about what was unique or different about each style and when that style was most popular. The tree section talked about the various ways they were used, pruned, and placed. The flowers section talked about the various ways they were placed (overall) and arranged (in the bed). The landscaping section talked about how terrain and water were used, added, or changed to create different looks (like wild or formal) or allow certain uses (like lawn games or mazes). The section on buildings talked about the different types of buildings added for practical purposes or for creating a certain look, and the same for the sections on architectural features and other features.
The text was brief and aimed at a person who is touring a garden to help them better understand what they are looking at and some reasons why a feature might have been used. Each section contained photos or illustrations showing what various features that you might find in a garden look like and the differences between them, like the difference between a pergola and an arbor. There were some mentions of when a certain feature was most popular or where it was popular (focusing on Europe and America). Overall, I'd recommend this book to people who enjoy touring gardens who want help identifying various garden features.
